Early LifeThomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Virginia. At age 14, he inherited his father’s land and slaves. He studied at the College of William and Mary and later became a lawyer. In 1769, he entered politics and began building his famous home, Monticello. He married Martha Skelton and had six children. Writing the Declaration of IndependenceIn 1776, Jefferson helped write the Declaration of Independence. His famous words included, "All men are created equal." Even though he wrote about freedom, he owned over 200 slaves in his lifetime. Political CareerJefferson became governor of Virginia in 1779 and later served as minister to France. In 1789, President George Washington made him Secretary of State. Jefferson later left this position and formed the Democratic-Republican Party with James Madison, supporting farming and strong state governments. Becoming PresidentJefferson ran for president in 1796 but lost and became vice president. He won the next election in 1800 and served two terms. During his presidency, the United States bought the Louisiana Territory and sent Lewis and Clark to explore it. He also fought pirates in the Mediterranean Sea. LegacyAfter his presidency, Jefferson retired to Monticello. He started the University of Virginia, the first American school with a library at its center, not a church. Jefferson believed religion and government should stay separate. He was also a skilled architect, farmer, and writer. His book collection became the start of the Library of Congress. |
