Clarifying the Second Amendment

This prompt explains the confusion surrounding the Second Amendment and asks students to clarify it.

Use this Activity:
Discuss - Ask students what they already know about the Second Amendment, and write key points from their responses on the whiteboard. Then, project the text of the Second Amendment and ask which words or phrases are confusing or unclear. Work together to clarify these terms, making sure to explain the word "militia" in particular.

Next, introduce the two main interpretations of the amendment: some people believe it protects an individual's right to own weapons, while others believe it refers to state militias or organized defense groups. Ask students why they think people disagree about its meaning.

After the discussion, have students begin the assignment.

Share - This is a great opportunity for students to share their writing.
Interactive Notebook - This is a great activity for placement in interactive notebooks.
